This year the Roman Carnival presents the Yorick Festival - dedicated to Yorick, the jester in Hamlet - through this figure the artistic director Leonardo Petrillo wanted to pay homage to the "folly", which is also typical of the carnival, without which it would be imprudent to cope with life.

Our production started off with one question: What would be gained if Shakespeare were told through a fusion of physical theatre and text. Could it be made more accessible? Could the language and movement enrich each other? Could further insight be gained? It was with these exciting possibilities that our madness was born.

With a beginning full of such potential, we didn’t just want to retell Shakespeare; we wanted to explore it. Therefore, instead of putting on King Lear, we decided to investigate what happened after the play. Lear is one of the most intriguing figures of Shakespeare’s plethora of characters. At the end of his story, there still remains the question of whether he has learnt anything from his tragic life. This is where The Madness of King Lear begins.
